LOCAL ARTIST AND MASTER OF PUNS
Kelly started Nerdpress in August of 2013 after a job change that allowed time for flexibility and creativity.
HOW WAS NERDPRESS CREATED?
In the summer of 2013 I moved positions to a three day a week job, allowing four days to play around with. I had always thought about it, even when I was little, I always thought that cards would be really fun to make. Because I had so much free time I started drawing to see if anything could come from it. It all started with the cards and it grew from there.
WHAT SPARKED THE IDEA TO MAKE SILK SCREENED ONESIES?
A Chicago kids store was having a pop-up shop with a bunch of local artists and when they asked for my cards the owner informed me that Chicago onesies were extremely popular. I hadn't previously thought about making onesies but I had done some silk screening before for fine art. I ended up staying up all night every night to get them finished and ready for the pop-up shop. I originally made seven different onesie designs, since then a couple of them have really taken off and they're now a huge part of the business. They're actually really fun to make and a great balance to the cards.
WHAT PROCESS DO YOU USE TO MAKE YOUR PRODUCTS?
It's all hand done. I originally watercolor and ink them, scan them and digitally fix minor details, print them on a regular ink jet printer, and hand cut, hand fold, and hand stuff.
Even the silk screening is very DIY, I make the silk screens with old picture frames and fabric that I find. I do all of the photo emulsion in my basement and heat set everything by hand with an iron.
